Skills and workforce development are constant challenges. What’s your approach to attracting and retaining talent, and how can the industry better inspire the next generation of construction professionals?
By Dee – Managing Director, Construction Professionals HR & Recruitment (CPR)
For me, the starting point is simple. We cannot talk about attracting the next generation if we are not developing the people we already have.
One of the biggest challenges in our industry sits at senior level. Many of our technical experts find themselves promoted into leadership roles because they are excellent at what they do. The problem is that technical excellence alone does not prepare anyone for managing people. It takes confidence, communication, emotional intelligence and clarity of direction. These skills have to be taught.
My approach is to support organisations with leadership coaching that develops newly promoted seniors into capable people managers who understand how to guide, motivate and retain their teams. When leaders feel equipped, teams feel supported, and performance naturally improves.
I also believe that those stepping into MD and Managing Partner positions need personal coaching that helps them navigate the pressures of visibility, decision making and accountability. When senior leaders grow in self-awareness and confidence, everything beneath them becomes stronger. Retention always starts at the top.
For new recruits, the answer is consistency. They need ongoing training that shows them how to take ownership of their development, understand the value of their contribution, and build a long-term future in the business. When people believe they are being invested in, they stay.
If we want to inspire the next generation, we must show them an industry that looks after its people at every stage. That means intentional leadership development, real opportunities for growth and a workplace culture where talent is nurtured, not assumed.
When we commit to developing the people we have, attracting the people we want becomes far easier.
